Cottages on the Coast: Fair Harbors and Secret Shores

UNIQUE COASTAL COTTAGES
This book has lots of photos of coastal cottages and a little bit of history for each one, some are tiny and others are pretty spacious from along the East Coast to the West Coast. Some of them are pretty old and small such as the 500 square foot cottage that was built in 1906 in Key West, Florida that was formerly occupied by hunters and cigar makers. There are some historical cottages, such as the one once owned by the famous playwright Tennessee Williams in Key West in which he purchased it around the year 1950. There are also a couple of interesting cottages located in Carmel, California with their unique architectural features and stunning views of the blue sea. When we think of "cottage" we normally visualize a small stone dwelling with cozy rooms and a stone fireplace, but some of the cottages featured in this book, are anything but small, some of them are quite large such as the three-story "cottage" in Margate, NJ with its Victorian architectural features and balconies on all three levels creating a vision of the turn of the 19th century. If you're planning to build a cottage of your own, this book will give you some pretty good ideas.

Picturesque.
"Cottages on the coast" really describes fair harbors and secret shores as promised. It also gives pictures of very different but equally charming and elegant buildings, both exterior and interior. The locations are different (three coasts of the United States), as are the owners. Pay special attention to the cottage that once belonged to Tennessee Williams. A wondeful book to enjoy or give someone as a gift.

Do they come with a housekeeping and gardening staff?
I bought this book to both dream and possibly get some ideas on a home on the water. With no floor plans it was hard to tell if there was a home (second home?) under 3000sqft. Since each charpter started with the architect and interior designer, I got the message. Call me. I bought a year subscription to Coastal Living. I won't let this book crush my dream for a home on the water.

Disappointed
I expected something different with this book. It depends on what you're looking for. I love the cottage look and feel in a home, but this was not really my definition of 'cottage.' When I think of coastal cottages, I think light, bright, airy and made up of furnishings that look like they've been collected over time. I think painted finishes and an inviting atmosphere that beckons you to just put your feet up, sit back and relax. I wasn't impressed with the way the rooms were photographed and it just didn't inspire me.
