I enjoyed “Four Seasons in Japan," partly because of the romantic story within a translator's story of gifted young artist Kyo, attempting to enter medical school, his formidable grandmother, Ayako, and Ayumi, the girl with whom he falls in love; partly because of its adept distillation of Japanese culture, including the use of calligraphy and proverbs; partly because of its expert evocation of the natural environment in Onomichi, where much of the story evolves; and because this veritable Japanese dream, as presented, reminded me so vividly of my own visits to the islands of Japan.

A lovely book. Each character was interwoven in the story.of a young student who really wanted to become an artist. I learned a lot of Japanese culture in the 21st century.

A story within a story within a story. Everyone looking for their own reality. Here, now, way back then. Everyone’s story.

The author broke two writing rules:1. Show, not tell.2. Delete the adjectives that prevent the reader’s own mind from creating imagery, like “pink polo top”.To be fair, I didn’t get past the first chapter. Maybe it improved.
