A wonderful lesson

The book is about a ugly duckling, in which everyone was mean to him. So one day he got fed up with them all so he then decided he was going to ran away to a pond but there was a shoot off . Which made him immediately run off. Later he ran across this old ladies home but he animals were also mean to him which he then went off to a pond. The pond happened to freeze in the winter time which a farmer rescued him which the duck didn't seem to like that so he then ran away again. But later on her realized he was a beautiful swan which he should of been able to feel all along but other's made him feel less of his self. This book teaches kids that you can't judge people by what they look like that it's what's on the inside that counts, and that you shouldn't ever be mean to others just because of their looks. I love this lesson because it's something that we have been telling our kids so they know not to ever pick on people because we are all the same. Everyone has different qualities that make them special and it's what makes them who they are so they need to get to know someone by their personality and all.It helps show how some people except who they are faster then others so by judging them it makes them feel less of themselves which is not something we need to be doing at all. You can't judge a book by it's cover it's what's inside the book that really matters so this is a wonderful lesson to teach kids and even remind adults as well.

Beautiful Yet Sad

This book was really sad and it was my first time reading it. I have heard of The Ugly Duckling before, but never read the original version by Hans Christian Andersen. The most heartbreaking thing about this book was that the duck was treated, so poorly because he looking different. In today's society sometimes we are told that we must all look the same and those who are different than the crowd are seen as outcasts. This book reflects on how in society people are different don't have as many opportunities and can be more saddened and depressed. This version of The Ugly Duckling has very pretty illustrations. This illustrations though do not really convey the true sadness that this book is. When reading this book I already knew the main plot of the story, so I knew what was going to happen at the end. What I did not expect what that 80% or more of this story was sad. I have heard that stories by Hans Christian Anderson, The Grimm Brothers, etc... we written to teach lessons to children. Unlike the stories in our 21st century where some stories are to entertain us, some are written to teach lessons, and others are a mixer of both. lo would say the lesson of this story is to not be mean to those who are different than you. We are all different and God created us that way. Each one of us has different strengths, weaknesses, good habits and bad habits. Through all of these differences and many more we should try and get along by seeing our similarities, but still understand and embrace our differences. Overall I would recommend this book because even though it sad the book still gives a great moral lesson.

Teaching the influence of others’ opinions on self-perception

A classic story which helps teaching kids about influence of others’ opinions on self-perception and self-confidence that eventually influences one’s life. You might need to explain the concept of the story to someone younger than 6.Beautiful illustrations and nice poetic choice of words will delight your kids’ eyes and ears and the story itself will enrich their hearts teaching them empathy and sympathy.

Different

This was the traditional ugly ducking story yet the details were different. There was more about the life of the ugly duckling growing up than I have ever seen before. It is an interesting take on the tale.

Definitely not for Little Kids... Not Sure what an Appropriate Age Group Would Be??

From the title and the cover illustration you might think that this is a story you could read to your little children, say toddler through early elementary school... it's not.(massive spoilers ahead)It's 95% text (which is fine, though that in itself already makes it much harder for little kids/toddlers to appreciate), but also, the text and story line are both... very difficult for children.Like many people, I was familiar with the general Ugly Duckling story... but I hadn't ever (like now) read through the full translation. What you find is a world where only outward appearances matter. Everyone is not only mean, but downright cruel to the a bird because it is deemed ugly, and thus unworthy.I always knew this was the main theme... I just didn't expect it to be hammered in quite so thoroughly within a book classified as a children's book. The drawings are fine, neither terrible nor great... but the actions of the animals are cruel, and our protagonist at one point (near the very end of the story) actually wants to die. When he sees a group of swans nearby, he doesn't think he's one of them, he thinks that they will be the one to finally put him out of his misery, to kill him since he'd prefer a quick death to being an ugly bird who is treated cruelly, starved, etc.First... is that the message you want to give to your children? That if they're not beautiful they won't be loved? And second, at what age group would it be appropriate to have a tale about a bird who wishes for death because he can't stand being ugly (and thus despised)? It's not often I dislike a children's book this much... but this is far more appropriately marketed for adults interested in reading a translation of the original than for children.

Late in life I hear the beauty of life!

I had never read or heard this treasure. I had heard the title, but that was all. Reading Richard Rohr's A SPRING WITHIN US this evening led me to this. It is never too late to touch beauty. Rohr made reference to this in sharing our call to accept the other and learn more truth. I am grateful.

Stunning, with a beautiful message

It's been a long time since I read The Ugly Duckling; I haven't read it in years since I was a small child. I found this illustrated version for free on the Kindle store and decided to grab it and revisit my childhood; plus, it's Hans Andersen who has always been a favourite of mine.I definitely got a lot more out of this book now I'm an adult, and was able to understand the message much more. It managed to sit with me a lot more now, understanding it so much better -- truly, the message is simply, don't judge a book by it's cover. This is a lesson I had forgot in a society that has become so judgemental towards everyone and anyone. It's hard to remember the simple lesson we are taught from this book, and it's hard to fully understand as a child. This lesson will definitely stick with me a lot more now, and will be a constant reminder in my own head for a long time. The illustrations definitely make this a lot more enjoyable. They're sweet, obviously made for children, but are pleasant to look at and so smooth on the Kindle app.The narrative flows beautifully; there isn't a break in it at all and it stays smooth throughout the story, making it easy to just flow read no matter what. It's a lot darker than what I remember as a child, but I suppose we all read the abridged version that wasn't so dark - like we did with all of Andersen's stories we read as children. This truly is still a wonderful story, and a classic. I would recommend this to everyone and anyone, for sure. It holds such a beautiful story and a stunning message. Maybe a lot of people in this current society actually need to read this.
