This is your workhorse, take care of her!
I was interested in Japanese carpentry for a while, and bought a Marples pull saw (ryoba). Then, I thought I should get something legitimately Japanese. I bought a Kakuri Ryoba and from there I precipitously slid down the rabbit hole of japanese carpentry, screaming "KAKURI!!!!!" with glee.I will be transparent that I've no experience with any other brand, but the Kakuri Anahiki is very much a work horse. She'll grunt and pull, do the job right, so long as you take care of her. At the same time, it's not quite an Ox that will pull out a tree stump with little difficulty. This is not the go-to saw if you're going to be felling a medium or larger tree for example.Ryobas are marvellous instruments, having two sides, one for rip cutting along the grain, another for cross cutting perpendicular, and perform quite admirably in their respective roles. The Anahiki doesn't deal with such semantics and chews through either and everything in between with gusto.I've heard it sold as something to help remove tree limbs, but I really only see myself doing that if my feet are on the ground. Trying to use it on a ladder I think would be awkward and dangerous, and would advised a curved blade in that regard.I have now Kakuri Anahiki, Ryoba (double sided saw), Azebiki (convex double sided saw), and most recently acquired their Kiridashi (marking/whittling knife, absolutely astounding). Phenomenal quality with a good price.

Saw that saws
With little effort, it cuts pine and even oak. The handle can be a bit slippery after working up a sweat.
