“In GENESIS, my camera allowed nature to speak to me. And it was my privilege to listen.” —Sebastião SalgadoOn a very fortuitous day in 1970, 26-year-old Sebastião Salgado held a camera for the first time. When he looked through the viewfinder, he experienced a revelation: suddenly life made sense. From that day onward—though it took years of hard work before he had the experience to earn his living as a photographer—the camera became his tool for interacting with the world. Salgado, who “always preferred the chiaroscuro palette of black-and-white images,” shot very little color in his early career before giving it up completely.Raised on a farm in Brazil, Salgado possessed a deep love and respect for nature; he was also particularly sensitive to the ways in which human beings are affected by their often devastating socio-economic conditions. Of the myriad works Salgado has produced in his acclaimed career, three long-term projects stand out: Workers (1993), documenting the vanishing way of life of manual laborers across the world; Migrations (2000), a tribute to mass migration driven by hunger, natural disasters, environmental degradation and demographic pressure; and this new opus, GENESIS, the result of an epic eight-year expedition to rediscover the mountains, deserts and oceans, the animals and peoples that have so far escaped the imprint of modern society—the land and life of a still-pristine planet. “Some 46% of the planet is still as it was in the time of genesis,” Salgado reminds us. “We must preserve what exists.” The GENESIS project, along with the Salgados’ Instituto Terra, are dedicated to showing the beauty of our planet, reversing the damage done to it, and preserving it for the future.Over 30 trips—traveled by foot, light aircraft, seagoing vessels, canoes, and even balloons, through extreme heat and cold and in sometimes dangerous conditions—Salgado created a collection of images showing us nature, animals, and indigenous peoples in breathtaking beauty. Mastering the monochrome with an extreme deftness to rival the virtuoso Ansel Adams, Salgado brings black-and-white photography to a new dimension; the tonal variations in his works, the contrasts of light and dark, recall the works of Old Masters such as Rembrandt and Georges de La Tour. What does one discover in GENESIS? The animal species and volcanoes of the Galápagos; penguins, sea lions, cormorants, and whales of the Antarctic and South Atlantic; Brazilian alligators and jaguars; African lions, leopards, and elephants; the isolated Zo’é tribe deep in the desertcart jungle; the Stone Age Korowai people of West Papua; nomadic Dinka cattle farmers in Sudan; Nenet nomads and their reindeer herds in the Arctic Circle; Mentawai jungle communities on islands west of Sumatra; the icebergs of the Antarctic; the volcanoes of Central Africa and the Kamchatka Peninsula; Saharan deserts; the Negro and Juruá rivers in the desertcart; the ravines of the Grand Canyon; the glaciers of Alaska... and beyond. Having dedicated so much time, energy, and passion to the making of this work, Salgado calls GENESIS “my love letter to the planet.”Whereas the limited Collector’s Edition is conceived like a large-format portfolio that meanders across the planet, this unlimited book presents a selection of photographs arranged in five chapters geographically: Planet South, Sanctuaries, Africa, Northern Spaces, desertcartia, and Pantanal. Each in its own way, this book and the Collector’s Edition—both edited and designed by Lélia Wanick Salgado—pay homage to Salgado’s triumphant and unparalleled GENESIS project. Review: AN AMAZING EXHIBITION OF PHOTOGRAPHIC ART - The Sebastião Salgado Genesis Hardcover Book was purchased during September of 2023 for the price of $18.39 plus tax. It is now avaialble for the price of $11.29 plus tax (Novemeber 22, 2024). It's not really just to compare the work of artists, in my opinion. However, when one views the works presented in this book, someone knowledgeable about the world of great photography would be hard pressed not to think of the work of Ansel Adams. However, the excellence of Salgado's printing technique is absolutely incomparable. Most people think of black and white photography as being reminiscent of a time during which color photography did not exist. Although that may historically accurate, there's no doubt that these black and white prints are beyond superlative in their richness of definition, their variance of tone, being almost infinite in gradation, and thoroughly mesmerizing in detail. I purchased 2 of these books as gifts for very dear loved ones for their birthdays. Now, I have to make the purchase so I will have one. This book is a treasure, and at the current price, it's a steal! Review: A breathtaking reminder of what a truly humanistic eye can reveal - Sebastião Salgado’s GENESIS is a breathtaking reminder of what a truly humanistic eye can reveal. Every photograph feels carved from the earth itself — compassionate, patient, and deeply attuned to the spirit of the natural world. The printing is extraordinary, that unmistakable Italian craftsmanship (almost certainly Mondadori), rendered with the depth, richness, and tonal grace his work deserves. At this price — especially with a coupon bringing the original large-format edition to around $58 — it’s an astonishing value. I’ve treasured our copy of Workers for years, and now GENESIS sits beside it like a sibling: powerful, elegant, and endlessly inspiring.

Spectacular photography of cultures around globe by brilliant Photo Essayist and ReGreening activist
Buy a hardback copy, at whatever the price you can find it. The photo book is over full of Astounding images of humans around our world in last decade. The photos are Black & White and people of all ages will find it mesmerizing, educating, question raising, joyous, sad, frustrating, and hopeful. The photo artist and photo essayist author is an adventurer, husband and father. Their family also revived a dying farm homestead in Brazil, by re-greening it and letting Nature replenish it. Did I say Buy it? You'll want this, and you'll want others to see it for themselves too.

Great, Important, Beautiful
This is a large book, a great book, an important book, a beautiful book. Its avowed purpose is to instill a love of our planet through the medium of magnificent black and white photographs of the world's untamed places, animals, and people, as they were or may have been in the time before history. The artist, Sebastiao Salgado, is a master photographer--a master landscape photographer, a master nature photographer, a master people photographer, and a master aerial photographer. Each of the hundreds of photographs magnificently printed in this book is a masterpiece, even those few printed in smaller than full-page format. There isn't a weak image in the lot. The pictures of unfamiliar places, animals, and people are no less than awe-inspiring. The pictures of more familiar places and animals, such as Bryce Canyon and Monument Valley, and lions, penguins and apes, stand favorable comparison with the very best black and white photographs of the same subjects by other master photographers. The book's layout gives respectful white space to the images, and while there are some larger images that span double-page spreads, I somehow didn't find this as annoying as I often do. This book is also a great bargain. Go buy it! As to its purpose, the book shows us the beauty of a fragile world we humans are on a fast track to destroying, but don't expect it to raise your commitment to alleviating global warming, our world's greatest existential peril. That's too much to expect of any book of photographs in this day and age of media saturation. Hopefully, some of the book's proceeds will help Salgado and his wife in their work of restoring a small piece of the Brazilian rain forest.

N*des inside
I bought this book with the idea to share it with my kids, but hey, there is n*de people inside. I understand, they are native people and it's normal for them but I don't think it's right for my kids to see them. I admire the work of Mr. Salgado, and he's showing the world like it is, but it's not for my kids. I'll pass.

the best Photography book I own
I have seen Sebastiao Salgado's work about migrations in walls as big as 10 x 15 feet and it was beautiful and shocking at the same time then. With his new book, Genesis, I was happily surprised in discovering a new Sebastiao Salgado: more optimistic, more hopeful and with a body of work beyond my best imagination. All his work is in black and white. Not any black and white. An AMAZING black and white collection. What an artist, and what a privilege to own his book. I look at this book for inspiration every week. I show my friends, and I talk about it. It is a very thick and heavy book, with fine art quality. I love the beautiful book that Steve McCurry has - Iconic-Photographs-Standard Edition - (it was my last year's Christmas gift!). This book is in the same level or maybe better for a fan of black and white like me. If you have any doubt about ordering or not, just do it. It is a beautiful book.

The finest photography book in the last 50-years
Salgado has outdone himself. This is his masterwork. I've been reviewing my copy since the start of June and admire not only the photography, but the editorial, the design, the separate index (which makes is very easy to learn about each photograph without having to constantly flip back and forth from the front of the book to the rear of the book as is the case with so many art/photography books.) I've bough copies for friends simply because I don't want my closes friends to NOT experience this work. This is a must for everyone -- not just photographers and art book collectors, but for every citizen of our planet. What a captivating work of art paying tribute to earth, nature and mankind. I believe this will be considered one of the masterworks of photographic publishing of all time. Buy this book. Every family and household should have a copy available for their children to explore.

The best black and white photobook I have ever purchased!
As the title reads, The best black and white photobook I have ever purchased! That pretty much sums it up. Salgado is a genius, this book is very large is size but almost every photograph in it is magical. The print quality is excellent. The only complaint I would have is that the binding in the books makes it tough to enjoy double paged photos but I can live with it.
