Creative Correction

You don't read this book, you digest it. It is that good. There is so much wisdom that to mention all of it would actually be to restate every word of it. The source of course is the Bible. If you are a parent with no understanding of Biblical texts please give this book a chance and digest it. I challenge you to discard prevailing norms like trying to be your child's friend and not parent, or like constantly praising them for who they are and not for what they DO. Use this book as reference for you and for when your children have children. Pay no attention to the one star ratings. I read them all. They make claims of which don't reflect the book at all! Their utter hatred of Christianity dictates their thinking and conclusions. Some I don't even think read the book.This book reflects the values of Americans before the 1960's. If you want America to be a better country AND become the best parent you can be please buy this book. Buy this to overcome natural tendencies like to over -coddling. Incorporate the many simple but beneficial strategies for great parenting. Christian or not, the goal of parenting is to produce accountable and responsible adults. Happiness is the natural outcome. This book will supply you with the wisdom to do just that!!!

Not every person will agree with all the information in any given parenting book. There is a huge range of parenting styles out there, and every child is different and will require a different form of discipline. However, this is the ONLY parenting book I own that I have re-read time and time again when faced with one of those nasty issues with one of my children that I feel so helpless to conquer.Each chapter is chock full of creative ideas. Your kids can't stop fighting? Have them go outside and scream "I love you!" back and forth 20 times. Too much whining? Send them to time-out, and don't let them come back until they've put their complaints to music. There are some ideas in Lisa Whelchel's book that I don't agree with and will not be trying with my children, but there are also a lot of really good, practical ideas in the book that I have had much success with.My favorite chapter included a list of undesirable behaviors (whining, lying, sibling rivalry, boasting) and some scriptures that address these behaviors, because I don't want to just change my children's undesirable behavior, I want their hearts to be transformed by God's Word.

For years my husband and I have struggled to practically and effectively bring more scriptures into our parenting styles and interactions with kids. This book has been the solution and inspiration to that weakness for us. Lisa is brilliant at sharing her own stories so you can not just relate as a parent, but also have vision and hope for your kids, too. We are so thankful to be reading this with a three-year-old and five-year-old and are already brainstorming ways to incorporate Lisa's tips into our daily lives.This would be a great book to read through with girlfriends and other parents to process through what's working and what's not working in your home. We have recommended this to friends, given as gifts, and consider it a staple in our parenting toolbox.

Being a mother of two young children I read everything I can on becoming a better parent. What I liked about Lisa's book is that she gets the parent thinking of multiple ways to handle various situations. Bottom line is all our kids are different. What compels one to obey doesn't always work on another. AND some discipline that is very beneficial for one child may be rather abusive to another based on their personality. It takes love, discernment and willingness to be consistent so your kids know you mean what you say. Bottom line, not all of her creative correction suggestions will work for you. Don't follow this or any parenting book religiously. However, it is definately worth buying and reading over and over--it has helped both me and my sister (who has middle school kids) be more effective with getting our kids to listen and obey--hurray! This is not some theoretical acedemic tome which purports to know best. Not only did the author actually try the ideas on her own children, she can attest to their effectiveness. Many (if not most) of the methods discussed have a firm based in developmental psychology and will produce positive results. The author freely admits that not all approaches work with all children (psychology again) but gives many possibilities to try.Those who believe that discipline is bad for children will find this book troubling. You will not find the "coddle the criminal" attitude as I call it here. This is a book for parents who want well behaved children who respect others.Well written with a sense of humor, Creative Correction is easy to read and follow. A must read for any parents wondering what to do.

Best parenting book I have ever purchased. This is a must have for all parents!

It is true this book can be overwhelming and come across as if all you do as a parent is discipline your kids or try to brainwashin them to behave certain ways. However, let's face it, kids do occasionally do things they shouldn't and need to taught appropriate ways to behave and to make good decisions. You don't have to use everything in the book. But, you just might find something that works well for your child and that you wouldn't have thought of on your own. I did.

I really enjoyed this book. A friend recommended it at a very frustrating time in my life where I wasn't sure what to do next with my kids. My kids are toddlers, but I feel like I found several things to use now, as well as many to use in the future. I've also learned recently it's important to start my day with a positive attitude. So, I need to treat each day as if it's Friday or a holiday. This has truly helped me calm down and focus more on the kids. Thanks!!!

I bought this book to use with my students as they are always asking about how to deal with challenging behaviour.I wanted something that was different.I would not take all the suggestions but on the whole it does what it says.I would recommend this book to parents and those who work with children as a consideration for alternative methods of behaviour management.
