Q: how use internal pipe wrench?

The Idea of a internal pipe wrench is not to mar the outside surface or the threaded areas. 90% of the time I use them to extract chrome plated pipe & rusted broken pipe nipples, especially in a shower wall. Since the eccentric rotates either direction, it can be used for installing or uninstalling in a clean professional manner.

Q: Can it both tighten and loosen the pipe nipples?

Yes, it works in both directions. On a side note, I also use a small pipe wrench with these on extra tight nipples.

Q: Can you use these with an impact gun? To retrieve a ferrell nut that has been rounded off inside an engine?

I would say no since they rely on constant pressure to maintain contact with the inside of a smooth surface (pipe). Also the hammering effect of an impact gun would probably break the tool.

Q: Does it work with PVC broken pipes?

Eric--As a follow-up, I've learned that most circular or eccentric-style extractors won't work on PVC. The problem is they have many mini edges to grip and hold the internal portion of this kind of pipe. These tend to dull with use, however, and don't grip well. They will also only make contact with a small portion of the inside diameter of the pipe, which further reduces your chances of success. What will work, however, is an Irwin Hanson ST-7 (9/16") or larger Straight Screw Extractor. These have a tapered, straight-sided profile with four sharp edges that will grip the pipe and twist it out. They will also work in either direction, for right- or left-hand threads. You turn these with a socket and ratchet, a tap handle or an adjustable wrench, depending on the space you have to work inAnother possibility is the Wheeler Rex 87050 Nipple Chuck for 1/2" pipe. This tool is used by plumbers to remove broken threaded pieces in a wall shower when the galvanized shower pipe breaks off and leaves a stub behind in the wall. These work well as you twist the outer portion to expand inside the broken stub; three sections expand outward to lock the tool in place, then you twist it out with a wrench in reverse. Very effective, as it distributes the force equally inside the broken stub. This last option is kind of pricey ($42.50 + shipping at this writing), so I'd try the Hanson ST-7 first. I hope this helps.
