Spellbinding
I have known of Elspeths journey, and this book for a while, but only now got around to reading it.Though it is now almost 40 years since her epic journey, the book reads as though it could have been written yesterday.Surely testament to Elspeths skill as a writer, but also to her character. This book is a refreshing change of perspective in a genre dominated by men, and lacks the phony bravado or machismo often found in the male versions of similar adventures. Her writing is honest, and direct, as well as empathetic and relatable. She is formidable and vulnerable, and incredibly likable!. Elspeth weaves her personal internal journey together with the 35000 mile external journey brilliantly. The narrative is captivating, and a proper page turner. One of those perfect books where you cannot wait to get to the end, but at the same time dread the thought of the book and the adventure being over.

An Exceptional Lady
A great read, real adventure. The fact her friends and family didn't appreciate the magnitude of her accomplishments upon her return is mind boggling! Much enjoyed reading.

A well written tale of adventure riding from a time before
A wonderful look into a time when adventure riding was in its infancy. I read this from cover to cover in a few days and found it honest and inviting. Elspeth faced tremendous hardships on her journey and including those personal details made the book even richer. I would recommend it.On a side note, Mary Siever, also a Brit, traveled the world on a 175cc BSA in the 1970s, roughly a decade before Beard. Unfortunately, there are only a few news clippings about Siever's trip, but still, she could lay claim to being the first British woman to travel around the world.

Among the best!
I have read a great many books by motorcycle travelers and this one is among the very best. It combines the truthful aspects of traveling by motorcycle with the meaningful story of personal wonder, pain, love, growth and development. I could not put it down.

A Wonderful Travel Story, filled with trials and growth
I really enjoyed this book. Elspeth reminds me of Katniss Everdeen in her stern approach to love and relationships, however I found myself crying uncontrollably by its tender, but bittersweet end. This book is a diary of adventures across the world in the 1980s on a motorbike. It has experiences first hand that only a woman rider would know or understand. I felt this is in my bones despite being born a few years after she arrived home in London in 84. This one started as fun book about the road and traveling; but ended on a much more serious note. The novel is ultimately a reminder of life's unforgiving nature. Life is to be grasped and lived, and there will always be decisions to be made. Excellent read.

Brilliant book!
Whether you ride a motorcycle or not, this is brilliant book and almost a must-read! Her writing style is delightful and brutally honest. A real breath of fresh air after some poor books by others in a similar vein. Buy it and you will not be disappointed!

A testimony of the human courage
A girl that started an adventure of epic proportions to escape a cozy but suffocating home tells us her experiences along the journey while teaches that we are more capable than we think. It’s all about releasing the lion inside each one of us.A must-have for all adventure aficionados be it bike lovers (my case) or not.

Fantastic read….
This is one of the best motorcycle round-the-world touring books I have read. An incredibly brave and honest account of a two year round the world trip in the 1980’s but also the life leading up to it and the life lived after it, with all its triumphs and challenges.
